    POSITION: Design Engineer Intern
    DEPARTMENT: Engineering
    CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt

    I. Summary

    General Responsibilities:
    The Design Engineer Intern follows instructions related to the design, tracking, and installation of
    systems and/or service installed jobs. This may include ordering of materials, entering of database
    and programming, creating and installing new software, and performing troubleshooting function
    of assigned jobs. This position coordinates with the Project Manager and Engineering Manager on
    all assigned projects.

    Reports to: Director of Controls
    Direct reports: None

    Direction:

    • Close supervision
    • Corrdinates with labor managers

    II. Major Responsibilities

    1. 40%  Updates pertinent job-related information. 

    • Develops project information (e.g., system and cabinet layouts, database, submittal cut sheets, etc.) using given software to meet sales intent of the project.
    • Generates RFIs (Request for Information) during project. Incorporates information from project blueprints, and specifications into submittal booklets.
    • Prepares system overview of network layout.
    • Prepares “as-built” record drawings and documents from data supplied by installation or operations personnel including graphical screenshots and printed programs
    • Stays current with new software and changes to existing software.
      • Studies product manuals/brochures, etc.
      • Navigates thru vendor websites to gather documentation (i.e. Infolink, FPG, etc.)

    2. 25% Assists with sales estimating on potential or current projects. 

    • Determines the time it will take to complete a task and is accountable to finishing projects on-time and under budget.
      • Correlates labor and material pricing from sales team while meeting guidelines set by plans and specs.
    • Determines when change orders are necessary and generates pricing for additional work

    3. 25% Assists with installation of controls jobs and projects.

    • Assists with startup, certification and project turnover, as required.
    • Assists with installation of devices/controls on any project, as required.

    3. 10% Provides customer service and technical assistance to build and maintain customer relationships.

    • Develops relationships with customer end users and decisions
      makers.
    • Presents a professional image of Building Controls and Services
      when speaking to customers.
    • Acts as a technical resource to customers and other BCS staff.

    III. Qualifications

    Education

    • Working toward bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or architectural engineering.
    • Technical training

    Skills and Experience

    • Minimum one year of experience in engineering systems and/or systems service, preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of automation systems, HVAC and electrical concepts and operations.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and
      maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Proficient in using the engineering workstation, including full capacity of the AutoCAD drafting standards.
    • Proficient in using current Windows Operating System for workstation and server applications
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole
      numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and
      create and interpret graphs.
    • Strong problem solving ability.
    • Ability to carry out instructions provided in written, oral or diagram form.
    • Ability to evaluate urgency of situation and prioritize tasks.
    • Organized with an attention to detail.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    • Valid driver license

    Other Requirements

    • May require overtime, evening or weekend work
    • Requires travel to and from job sites for start-up and commissioning
    • Requires occasional overnight stays

    Training and Development

    • 40 hours continuing education annually

    Physical Requirements
    Requires sitting and walking on a frequent basis; standing, bending, climbing, balancing, twisting, and reaching with hands and arms on an occasional basis.

    Requires the ability to carry, lift, move or push up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and may be required to carry, lift, move or push 100 pounds or more occasionally. Must be able to talk and listen to others and uses hands or fingers to handle of feel on a regular basis. Frequent use of manual dexterity and visualization of a computer screen through the day. Requires ability to see up close and distant, distinguish colors, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    Work Environment
    This position regularly works in an office setting and also on job sites in all types of indoor and outdoor conditions including near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, extreme heat, cold and humidity. Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic fumes or chemicals. Regular noise levels range from moderate to very loud when visiting job sites.

    Most of the job duties require the employee to be working on HVAC equipment in close quarters. Most testing is done with the equipment operating, creating noise and air movement. Many of our customer facilities have unfavorable environmental conditions. Many job duties require the employee to work with computers and electronic media on a regular basis.

    The Equipment Application Engineer Intern coordinates with the HVAC outside sales team to promote, estimate, and bid various product lines re presented by BCS.

    Direct reports: None

    Direction:

    • Some supervision
    • Work is reviewed regularly.

    II. Major Responsibilities

    1. 60% Provide support to sales staff in product sele ction and pricing.

    • Designs VFR layouts with engineers and contractors as directed by outside salesperson.
    • Selects preliminary equipment with outside salesper son on upcoming design/plan & spec projects.
    • Reviews plans, specifications, addendums and bid da tes for projects.
    • Verifies equipment selections on BCS basis of desig n projects in preparation for bids.
    • Take-offs/Estimates/Prices for large HVAC equipment & other miscellaneous items from our product lines with out side salesperson’s oversight.
    • Coordinates bids with other AE and BC.

    2. 30% Coordinates product and equipment orders.

    • Updates internal and external databases to keep up- to-date on the status of all sales opportunities.
    • Gathers information and generate submittals to meet project specifications for approval by design engineer.
    • Orders equipment form approved submittals.
    • Coordinates ordering and project information with p roject manager to ensure smooth handoff.
    • Price change order as necessary.

    3. 25% Assists with installation of controls jobs and projects.

    • Assists with startup, certification and project turnover, as required.
    • Assists with installation of devices/controls on any project, as required.

    3. 10% Provides customer service to existing and pote ntial customers.

    • Assists customers and potential customers with prob lems involving the use of company products and services and recommends suitable solutions according to their needs.
    • Attends local events in an effort to build and stre ngthen relationships while promoting BCS and its offerings

    III. Qualifications

    Education

    • Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field.

    Skills and Experience

    • One year of experience in engineering systems or re lated field, preferred.
    • Some knowledge of engineering fundamentals and HVAC concepts and operations.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Mathematical abilities to add, subtract, multiply a nd divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and create and interpret graphs.
    • Ability to build rapport and strengthen relationshi ps with new and existing customers.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
