Problem:
To accommodate a growing student body, the Rhatigan Student Center underwent a total renovation in 2010. The objective was to gut the interior, add 60,000 square feet, and modernize the space and amenities without increasing utility bills.
Solution:
To fit the heating/cooling needs of the extra square footage, BCS supplied a high efficiency, evaporating, condensing AAON chiller that tied into the facility’s existing chillers. BCS also integrated DDC Controls with the equipment supplied and a variety of other vendors.
Completed in 2014, the modernization has been wildly successful.
Today, individual sets of rooms can be remotely controlled using variable air volume boxes. Occupancy sensors detect vacant rooms and adjust to energy saving temperatures accordingly. Controls and utility monitoring further enable the facility manager to operate and manage systems throughout the entire building. Additionally, increased popularity led the center to extend hours of operation by 29 a week.
Despite the larger facility, extended hours of operation, and power to more TV’s, lights and individual computers than ever before, the RSC experienced a 15% drop in energy consumption per square foot.
"BCS is a great collaborative partner that offers solutions that fit our needs. The 365 ton AAON Chiller answers our needs and is saving us money."
