Eisenhower and Washington Elementary Schools Undergo Vital HVAC Upgrades in McPherson, Kansas
McPherson USD 418 is making significant strides in modernizing its school facilities with a major HVAC renovation project currently underway at Eisenhower and Washington Elementary Schools. Set for completion in Summer 2025, the project represents a critical investment in the learning environments of one of Kansas’ most dedicated school districts.
The upgrades come as the district, which serves approximately 2,311 students across six schools, continues its ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and prepare for future capital initiatives. With community conversations around potential bond measures in the future, these improvements showcase the district’s commitment to responsible planning and facility enhancement. USD 418 includes four elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, along with alternative education and early childhood programs.
The multi-million-dollar capital project is being delivered through a collaboration between BCS and the district itself. Financing support is provided through a lease-purchase agreement facilitated by Piper Sandler.
Outdated Systems Get a Modern Makeover
The heart of the project involves replacing critical HVAC infrastructure that had long exceeded its useful life. Crews are removing two outdated air handling units (AHUs)—one 25,000 CFM and one 40,000 CFM—alongside an old AAON rooftop unit and a Trane chiller. In their place, the schools will receive:
The upgrade aims to enhance indoor air quality, improve energy efficiency, and standardize systems across the district, which will ease the burden on maintenance staff.
Addressing Long-Term Challenges
“USD 418, like many districts, has prioritized critical infrastructure needs while navigating a complex funding environment,” said Nathan Reed, a former superintendent and current business development representative from BCS. “Our team at BCS helped them identify the most critical systems to replace, and the district was able to create a financing plan that fits their budget.”
The elementary schools, essential hubs for early education in the community, had been operating with HVAC units installed in the 1990s. These systems had served well beyond their expected lifespan, creating efficiency and maintenance challenges typical of aging infrastructure
A Strategic Vision for the Future
District leaders and project partners hope this renovation will serve as a blueprint for future improvements across USD 418’s facilities. By demonstrating fiscal responsibility, operational savings, and improved learning environments, they aim to build public support for a long-term capital improvement plan.
“This is the first step in a 5–10 year journey,” said Nathan. “If we lead by example and show tangible results here, we believe the community will rally behind the next phase.”
The district also anticipates substantial cost savings over time due to energy-efficient technology and reduced maintenance calls. A unified controls system from Siemens will replace the patchwork of different front-end platforms currently used, simplifying system management.
Looking Ahead
The project at Eisenhower and Washington Elementary Schools reflects a renewed focus on providing students and teachers with reliable, safe, and efficient learning spaces. As the district lays the groundwork for broader improvements, the success of this initiative could be the catalyst USD 418 needs to build momentum for important district-wide upgrades that have long been part of the district’s vision.
