Our engineering team sees a lot of energy myths and we are ready to set the record straight. The second energy myth we want to debunk is whether or not it saves energy to turn off appliances and turn them back on only when you need them. While in past decades this may have been the case, it is no longer true!

Our engineering team sees a lot of energy myths and we are ready to set the record straight. The first energy myth we want to debunk is whether or not it saves energy to on run your Air Conditioning when you need it. This is true! It takes less power to let the heat rise and turn on the AC to lower the temperature when you need it cooler. For example, if you are going to be gone during the day for work, you should set your AC at a high temperature and then turn it back down when you get home.

Posted in Ken’s Metaphors for Success

It’s Metaphor Monday!

This is a hot button with me. In our fast paced world of increasingly tighter deadlines, higher Customer expectations, and constantly evolving standards for correspondence, there is one trait that trumps all others if you truly want to succeed… communication!

In talking with vendors, contractors, support staff, or employees, I am pretty patient with someone being behind schedule, with a delivery problem, or someone having an occasional personal issue, as long as they talk to me.  Not doing so, is simply not an option if you aspire to higher levels.

When establishing rules of engagement between team members, or customers, in today’s world of multimedia, always ask, “How do you prefer that I communicate with you?”.  Those nine words will save you countless hours of needless frustration.

Here’s Ken’s Metaphor for Success #4:

My maternal Grandfather Wycoff was a School Administrator and an English Teacher.  One of his prized sayings was “there are numerous reasons in our world to be poor, however there is absolutely no reason to sound that way”.  I believe it wholeheartedly.  Much of my success can be attributed to effective correspondence, whether speaking to groups, or writing letters and memos, no question.  Prompt return correspondence is the remaining piece of the Communication puzzle.  People gradually lose respect for those that don’t communicate well.  Extraordinary communicators usually go on to do great things.

Leadership ImageOrganizations take on the personality of their leaders. They can thrive through the ups and the downs, or crash and fail when adversity hits. Even leading through the good times can be a challenge.

BCS is reflecting on our 30th anniversary this year, and looking back, we realize how leadership has brought us through some difficult times (two recessions) and through the good times, as the energy industry begins to boom with the advent of smart buildings.

We asked our President, James Herman, how BCS has grown and thrived over the years, from 1985, when Ken Stoppel and three HVAC colleagues started Building Controls and Services, Inc. to 2016 with 100 employees and 3 offices across the Midwest. One big reason was the diversification of services, going beyond the initial digital controls for heating and air to sales of HVAC mechanical equipment, fire and security systems, and variable refrigerant flow systems.

But the support and steadiness of the leadership are what strengthened the business and made BCS a success story. James Herman and all of BCS’ managers exude the traits of good leaders. James shared the following three leadership principles, which can apply in any aspect of life and business:

1.Do the Right Thing, and Do What You Say You Are Going to Do: This doesn’t mean that you don’t make money. All businesses have to make money. But honor your commitments and finish projects on time. “Just do it.” If you have a piece of equipment that isn’t working, you solve the problem immediately and then figure out who is going to pay you.

2. Set High Goals and Focus on Them: Visualize, write it down, meditate, pray, whatever it takes. Picture the goal, and don’t let anything get in the way. This is applicable to the business, your employees, and yourself. I set goals in this way when I played sports. I would decide how many tackles a game I wanted to get and then visualized myself busting through the line and making the tackles.

3. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate: Whenever you think you have done enough, communicate more.  Communication builds and maintains relationships, facilitates innovations and solves problems.

There you have it! Short but impactful leadership principles you can carry with you whether you are in your first job out of college or  moving into your 10th year as C-level executive.

BCS was presented the top tier Medallion Award for the rehabilitation of their historical office building at the annual Kansas Preservation Alliance awards ceremony. Each year the Kansas Preservation Alliance, Inc. recognizes exemplary efforts in historic preservation across the state of Kansas. The 2013 Award for Excellence was presented on Friday, May 24th in Topeka at the Memorial Building Auditorium.

BCS has experienced significant growth and changes over the past several years. In fall 2010, Ken Stoppel, BCS President, and James Herrman, BCS Vice President of Operations purchased the old Fisher’s Transmission building in Wichita, Kansas which was in need of major remodeling. After some preliminary investigation completed by the architect, SPT Architecture, it was discovered the space had historical value. BCS decided to move forward with an historical renovation and hired Christy Davis, preservation consultant, to help with the project.

The “Luling’s City Laundry” building was originally constructed in 1924 with a west side addition completed in 1936. The building was designed for maximum fire safety, lighting and ventilation. Some exterior features are multi-pane industrial steel sash windows on the north and east elevations, historic masonry, and chimney. Interior features include an open floor plan, exposed steel trusses, monitor roof with clerestory windows, and steel fire doors. The main goal was to transform the building into an office environment while keeping the industrial style of the original building wherever possible.

The project team included Southwestern National Bank, SPT Architecture, Davis Preservation, Professional Engineering Consultants, Miller and Miller Construction, Central Air Conditioning Co., A&H Electric, Blake Clotia, Midwest Drywall, Lewis Street Glass, Dalian Decorative Designs, Martin Welding, Contract Furnishings, and many of the employees at BCS.

These products are blowing our minds. Here’s how:

1. They’ll save you money, lots of it.

ClimateCraft’s BalanceStream™ allows you to operate at higher efficiencies over the entire operating range and increases your ability to run at lower loads while reducing your need for reheat in VAV applications. This innovative technology is a spring actuated inlet cone that allows stable operation down to 10% of design. It prevents fan surge and requires no additional complex fan cycling control strategies. It enables 90% turn-down on direct drive VFD controlled fans, maintains set static pressure with one moving part, and acts as an automatic backdraft damper if a fan fails.

2. They are the best bang for your buck.

FlexSpeed™ motors are the first of their kind. They are designed to power fan arrays with variable frequency drives (VFD’s). This technology allows for better payback over the life of the motor as a result of higher operating efficiency and a longer anticipated service life. FlexSpeed uses 3% less power than a general purpose motor over entire operating range. Motor maintenance is reduced and reliability is increased since FlexSpeed motors run cooler resulting in a longer motor life.

3. No leaky cabinets.

With ClimateCraft’s Cabinet Construction, you’ll never lose air again. The cabinets have a unique standing seam construction and a 0.5% leak rate at 12” of static pressure. Here’s the game changer: ClimateCraft products are built with integral air seals throughout so not only do their cabinets not leak, neither do the internal coil, filter or fan sections. These seals are created using thick rubber gaskets and smart framing so you can say goodbye to all of that caulk. Need to replace a coil or coil external panel? No problem, they still won’t leak after repair.

4. They’re revolutionary.

One of the most cost-effective strategies to reducing air flow disruptions in a space due to mechanical failures is to use multiple fans in each air handler. The issue with this is sizing them correctly for 100% redundant capability without using very costly, fully redundant AHU’s. ClimateCraft solved this problem. FanMatrix™ fan array towers are designed to balance longevity with operational costs. The inertial base design eliminates fan harmonic vibration damage that occurs to fans operating within normal fan arrays. Similar to your vehicle, FanMatrix towers can also include MatrixMonitor™ to indicate smart lubrication intervals as well as monitor air flow and fan vibration using tri- axial accelerometers.

Woah, they’re good.

5. Complicated installations are easy.

Do you have a worn out, inefficient air handler installed in a small space with limited accessibly? Inevitably, this unit will need to be replaced. Don’t fret, ClimateCraft has a solution for you: ACCESS™. ACCESS is an engineering and manufacturing process for knock-down air handling units designed for simple and rapid field assembly at your job site. These units are specifically engineered to fit through doorways and can handle up to 60,000 CFM. The units ship to the job site on individual pallets including thorough installation instructions and barcodes for easy replacement. No field disassembly is required and the components are designed to navigate tight spaces, narrow corridors and sharp corners.
